Depends on the tire (Bias or Radial), and application (Drag only or Street/Strip), but I would generally be happy with 1/2 an inch.

ok sorry its a 30x11x15 bias ply slick and its a drag car only 10 miles a year on street, also how much room needed in front for growth
I have run tighter, like 7/16 inside/outside but both sides of the slicks are showing rub marks. I lube the tires with tire shine real well to help. The rubbing comes when going around corners on the return roads, etc. At speed the sidewalls are pulled in and have more room. As for the face of the slick, one inch should be enough. I would look for anything that could leave a gouge in the tire surface if it did make contact though, and smooth that out so it won't tear up the slick.

I like 3/4 everywhere... I have touched at 1/2 mainly in the front... so 3/4 works for me... if you think its gonna touch put a radius there so it rubs on a radius instead of something sharp

should i go with the 10" wide wheels so its not so wide, but i was trying to go with a wider wheel to flatten tread out

Its not so much about the sides... just make sure you dont have any sharp edges... the turns will get the sides if your driving too quick... I got loose one time and put a nick in my side wall... so I rolled the lips and got 3/4... never had any issues since

if it's a drag car 3/4" should be good. the section width is or sidewall and how soft it is is whats important. If you put a 10" wheel vs a 12" then you section width is going to buldge more. measure from the front face of your drum to the lip on your outer wheel well if your putting a 12" wheel on with 6" of back spacing and you have 7.5" from drum to inner wheel lip you add 1" for section width making 7" gives you 1/2" you can also measure from the inner whell well to outer to find out how much tire you can stuff in there. The closer the tire to the lip the less body roll you can have, which makes street drive no fun
