Drive my 300m special, after awhile when coming to a stop, the car will make a hard down shift, and then be in limp mode. i can turn the car off and restart it and it will be out of limp mode, but then when i come to another stop, or slow down enough that it would down shift, it will go back into limp mode.
causes?
I read somewhere that the battery cable ends need replaced. will do that tomorrow, but wondered if anyone else had issues or an idea about this?

More likely, it is either the transmission input or output sensors. If either fail, the car goes into limp mode. One of them may be ready to quit. I have heard they are not too expensive or hard to replace yourself (but I have not had to replace mine yet).

Have seen quite a few transmissions do this from plugged filters, if its high mileage and fluid never changed. Loses pressure, and then goes into limp. Let sit for a second, drains back and repeats. May be worth a shot, but best case there is enough material to plug a filter...

Doug, definitely fix the cable ends before worrying too much about transmission woes. I read an article today in GEARS magazine(a trans speciality mag) about chrysler transmissions being extremely succeptable to faults resulting from not enough voltage/bad grounds. They even say that the car will start fine like no problems with battery but still have problems.

thanks Lonnie, changing the cable ends tomorrow, hope it fixes the issue, if not just hoping to get an idea what would be next step.

My wifes 04 Intrepid did the same thing, it was a solenoid on the valve body.

Have you checked to see what code it's throwing?

turn the key 3 times, only code showing is p0456, hook it up to a diagnostic machine, only code showing is p0456.

I agree with input and output sensors. I have seen a few of these. Good luck keep us posted.
Take it to a dealer, they will give you an absolute acurate diagnostic. They have all the right equipment.

May have been a solenoid in the solenoid pack as it comes on the valve body also. Some places take no chances and replace the valve body with the solenoid pack. Glad you got it fixed. Ron

I remember my sister's minivan having similar issues. All the shops wanted to rebuild the transmission.

I fixed it by replacing the wire connectors to the solenoid pack. It cost less than $20.

Back in 1999 my wife's 300M went into limp mode, it was the output sensor...
