I did the same as you. Painted the engine bay and then looked at that ugly K-frame. Now.... my car is no resto OR showcar, just a street driver. I cleaned it real good with a wire brush then wiped it down with solvent and let it dry overnight. I used a foam brush and Rustoleum semi gloss black. Came out fine. If your car is a full blown resto, some of the other guys may have some better suggestions.

Por-15 or Chassis Saver paint and a foam brush... the stuff lays out flat... I did the whole chassis on my tube chassis Rampage... it does lay out flat... but it doesnt have UV protection... but I dont think you care being its not in the sun ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

Rustoleum gloss black, looks plenty good enough. Everything is mostly on top of it, and I did it for the same reason you did No overspray allowed.
Brushed-on Rustoleum gloss black worked for me too. Looks just fine.

brushed my VC and the front chassis on my truck with a brush, didnt have any brush strokes on the VC either when done, nice and thick too.
I used gloss and used the semi gloss on stuff with a brush, for no brush strokes, put it on heavy and as few strokes as possiable and let dry/cure.

Best way to clean and prep the K member for paint is to take it off so you can actually get to every part of it. Then either paint it with urethane primer and a urethane topcoat, or powder coat it. Not "even for a driver," but especially for a driver - it will last a whole lot longer and be easier to keep clean than half-ace cleaning it in the car and brushing rustoleum or some such on it. Prepped right, even twenty years later it will still look good. Take short cuts, and it will be obvious in a year or two.
