The housings originally have a zinc & brown dichromate finish. What have others done to restore theirs? Any at home options?

Who offers a restoration service to have them redipped? How much?

This is NOT for the full OE route, BUT.
My customer had no interest to go there. He was after more of a similar appearence verses costs aspect.
So take this for what it costs ya.

And this is what I started with.
A silicone filled worn down mess, so we felt I had nothing to lose

so -

Another member here last year recomended Eastwoods Carb coat paint. So I decided to give it a try.
This stuff is kind of thin, so it takes a couple light coats to acheive this depth of color.

Insides , were painted with Krylon chrome paint. To give it something of a reflective quality.

Last one,
In the car.
All told I have maybe 2 maybe 3 hours worth of time and maybe $30 total in paints. Both myself AND especially the cars owner. We were pleased with the outcome.

I'll admit, if I had it do over. I might get costs estimates to have them dipped and plated correctly and then weight the options.

But for the hobbiest doing there own car, this might be an option - as to them it's just materials costs.

First lets look at original examples from a 11K survivor 71 Cuda. Here is one side.

Here is the other, same car. Both are original to the car, in mint condition, and never touched or restored in any way.

So, as you can see, they varied from the factory, may have been two venders with two different methods of metal wash/plating, I can't say, but they definately varied. Also, age and humidity etc. can alter the finish, I believe this is why some look darker/muddier than others.

I strip them and recolor them similar to how a Holley carb body is refinished, this is what they look like when done. It's pretty darn close to the second OEM example. I don't know of any other method to get them closer. Cost is under $100.00 a pair.

Very nice.

I just redid mine last week the way Bill did his and I'm happy with the results. If I hadn't done all the labor myself, I'd definitely HAPPILY spend the $100 with Scott, no question. Instead I ended up with something that visually represents what its supposed to look like... total time on the housings probably 1hr + something like $18 for the paint.

I'll give a shout out to Detroit Muscle Technologies for the gaskets. VERY, very nice. I think $25 for that gasket set is a BARGAIN. Should charge more.

Scott, do you strip the housings with Muriatic acid?

Thanks.

Thanks for the props!

With Bills mad skillz he can probably whip some up. By the way what DO you do for gaskets Bill?

You know, this is the second set of tail lights I have refurbished. I did my Bee's lights last year.

It seems silly, but I can honestly say that of all the tasks involved in bringing a car back... the tail lights are one of my favorites.

I think its because its easy, nearly impossible to screw up, and the finished tail light looks so nice sitting on the table before you put it back on the car.

The Bee's lights were a little more involved with the accent paint. A tad more expensive/time consuming/fun to restore.

Jim,
do you really need to ask this?
Every gasket on this car AND on the 69 Charger I have in now is DMT stuff .

I usually just let my customer buy it at shows or off your site then drop ship it to me, saves me one less thing to worry about and saves them cash.

Can you tell me what Eastwood Carb paint you used, I see they have a couple. Carb Renew 2 and Carb Renew 2 Bronze.
