Would it matter if one gasket is .038 and one is .039 compressed thickness, the one on the passenger side is .039 and I was gonna buy a gasket that is .038 compressed thickness but didn't know if the different thicknesses would matter I had to pull off the driver side head due to it leaking.

The one side is 0.001" off. That is what it is.
If the one side is 0.039" why would you buy a 0.038" for the other side? No reason? Then don't do it.

Was gonna go with a cometic gasket on the side that I had the problem with for better insurance. And don't want to pull the other head off unless I absolutely have to.

.001" isn't going to make any difference however you better measure that Cometic as I recall another post on here where someone measured one and it was off significantly from what was advertised. I don't know if it was packaged wrong or what but I would measure. The flat surfaces of a Cometic don't crush, only the embossed areas.

That would be me, and that's a big 10-4! Advertised at .040". Actual was .052". As was said, measure each section ( on the flat ) individually and add them up. Cost me just under 1/2 a CR.
