Hey guys-
My brother has a 2004 Dodge Stratus 4 door with the 2.4 and automatic. It has just over 100,000 miles on it and he never had the fluid/filter replaced. The car ran great and shifted fine, the fluid was just a little dirty.
I just pulled the pan,and replaced the filter. Re filled it with the proper ATF+4. No leaks, and got it filled up to the proper level. Now it upshifts great and feels very smoothe.
The problem is after getting up to speed and comming to a stop,at about 30 mph the downshift into first is very harsh/clunky. Any idea what this could be?

They actually had problems with the pumps that would cause that. I bet it is the 4/3 downshift as all the customers also thought it was the shift back into first. If you know anyone with a scanner have them reset the QuickLearn. If not you can try unhooking the battery for about 10 minutes. The TCM has an adaptive memory as it will learn how you drive it and adapt how the shift solenoids apply the clutches. Usually if that fixes it for a while and then if it does it again then it may need a pump. The problem with the pump is delayed engagement at times into first gear which is applying the underdrive clutch. The delay causes the CVI count to go up as the trans will adapt to how fast the underdrive clutch applies. And since it runs the CVI count up it will apply underdrive harder when its not delayed any. When the trans downshifts from 4th to 3rd the underdrive clutch gets engaged and it usually bangs in which causes the banging on the downshift. But try and get the Quicklearn set and then see how it does after that. See if the banging comes back in a week or so. If not then dont worry about it. Its best to have the QuickLearn set with a scanner. Ron

Had the same problem with my brothers van.Seems the trans fluid was the wrong type.Pulled the pan and refilled with proper fluid and was good.Sounds like you used the proper fluid though.Anymore you have to read the dip stick to find out what they use.Rocky

No it is going from fourth to third. The same clutch comes back on in third (direct clutch) as it is also on in first. First is the direct clutch and the low/reverse clutch and fourth is the overdrive clutch and 2/4 clutch. Third it the overdrive clutch and the direct clutch and it is the direct clutch that will run the cvi's high if it is delayed in first sometimes. It wont learn to fix itself if it has that problem. Thats why setting the Quicklearn resets all the clutch cvi's and will make the direct clutch come on normal. It will learn to apply faster (harder) if the pump causes the delay and does not apply the direct clutch right away. It uses pressure switches to know when the clutches apply and if one takes to long it will cycle the solenoid faster to apply it faster which when it applies to fast it will bang. Good luck , Ron
I know,I was responding to another member who thought I said it was going from 4th to first.
Sorry about that didnt mean no disrespect. Ron

You need to do a quick learn. Same thing happened to my 02. Was going from 4th to 3rd so hard, I thought for sure it was going to break something. Took about a minute with the DRB and it was back to normal.
