I am rebuilding my '71 340 engine. For the most part it is a stock rebuild with a slightly larger cam. Should I use a stock oil pump or a high volume oil pump? Years ago, I was told not to use a high volume oil pump for a street motor. Car will mainly be driven to car shows and cruise ins. What do people recommend?

Thanks

std vol/psi. If you had extensive oiling enlargement mods/large clearances then yes a hi vol/psi but your app it costs a bit of horsepower which is not a deal breaker but stresses the inter shaft hex more which is important. A std Sealed Power unit taken apart/clearance checked/cleaned will work fine

HighVolume is overkill for most street motors. I take it apart a Standard Pressure pump, clean up the casting flash in the passages, round any sharp corners, check clearances and reassamble with a HighPressue spring.

A stock volume pump is all you need.

Is there any harm by using one? Two years ago when I did my 383 I put one in. No issues so far, but these last two years have only seen about 40 total miles.

I put an HV pump in each of my builds. Never a problem with it, or the drive.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

The A motors don't have the oiling issues that the B and RB motors do so there is no need for a high volume oil pump on a stock street driven SB, 318, 340 or 360
