I suppose it should seem obvious to me that it would eventually happen, but I thought I would have to be running a lot faster than 12.60's. I have never weighed the car, but I would guess it would probably weigh all of 3800 lbs. No transbrake, 3500 stall, 29.5 X 10.5 slicks, and I know I have less than 70 passes total on the car. It does have a spool in the 8 3/4 but I've never run it on the street; it been on the track only since I put it together. The left axle, (the one that didn't break) was twisted in the splines as well. Assuming the car led a pedestrian lifestyle before I got it, (that's what I'm told) I am just surprised that they had such a short lifespan. I have lots of friend that have been running stock axles (in faster cars) for years with no problems. Fwiw they twisted just out side of the spool.

Stock axles and a spool are a no no and now you know why.

They ALL twist outside of the spool(the spool holds
the splines straight).... I broke a stock axle 35 years
ago... I always buy aftermarket for any car with any
type of slicks... my currant axles have about 1 whole
spline of twist and they've stayed there.... by the
way... paint a white line down the whole length of
the new axles when you put the new ones in.... you
will learn ALOT from that line

It sounds like the axles got swapped from one side to the other, usually the left axle breaks first I have broken two stock 8 3/4 axles with posi, none since I bought Strange race axles. I also switch to 35 splines with the new axles and spools I now run a Dana 60 with the same 35 spline race axles as I started with 6 years ago in the 8 3/4

Short lifespan? That was what, a 45 year old axle you were abusing?

Anyway I did the same thing with a locker, I went to Strange after mine broke...

Broke an axle in my '66 Charger. 4150lbs. with me in it. Drag radials 4.30s with locker. Pretty exciting ride for a couple seconds.

ouch 12.60? Now I know I need to swap mine out ASAP. I have a set from DrDiff sitting next to the car. FWIW I ran 12.0's with stock rear/axles for and entire year w/ no problems 1.65 60 foot in a 3850lb car. This one has had only a few runs and 1.60 60 foot.

When is the last time you looked at the splines on either car?

never but I'll be looking at these soon as they will be swapped out before the next "outting" as I plan on making some 100% all out passes.

I checked mine when it was running low 13's on street tires & a 4.10 gear. Saw they were just starting to twist after 1 1/2 years racing it & street duty. It was an E-body 8 3/4 rear narrowed. Put aftermarket with a sure grip & finally a spool.
IIRC in the NHRA rule book it says aftermarket axles required with a spool.

I broke a stock axle on my 3700 lb 1973 Barracuda with 440, 3900 converter, 1.55 sixty foot, 8-3/4 rear, suregrip, slicks. I don't remember exactly, but maybe 150 passes. Aftermarket axles after that and no problems.

I ran resplined axles with a sure grip for over 15 years 11.60@3800lbs. They had 1 spline of twist when replaced. I also ran 12.50@3750lbs with a stick for about 100 passes with the same amount of twist. Both on slicks.
