Here is my take on closely looking at the reproductions at the Nationals last week. On the cowl, there are some minor issues that I could see. First, there is supposed to be a little nub to hold the ballast resistor (near the wiper motor). On 70s its one way and on 72 up its another. The reporduction does not have this nub. Also, there are a couple of dimples that appear not to be there. The firewall was the same way. There were a few missing dimples (compared to the 70 I have) and some of the bends did not look as crisp. I have been pretty intimate with the firewall and cowl on my project. Would I purchase these if I didn't have the parts car? Sure would. There was nothing I saw that couldn't be fixed or modified to the correct year. I can't comment on the exact fit though, but since that part of the car is pretty hidden, there is probably some allowance for fit up that wouldn't be noticed.

welding in the original VIN will look like the car has been rebodied or is a clone if anyone ever scrapes the paint off. This could come back to bite you later. If possible, I'd suggest only replacing the rotten portions and leaving as much original cowl as possible.

Saving the original cowl in not an option. Is stamping the VIN into the repop an acceptable option to the VIN police? {:>)
If I use one of my parts car cowls, it will have an incorrect VIN! Also, what are the odds of the paint being scraped off after restoration?
