from the "BACK IN THE DAY" file : let's see if I can get this right .
I believe it was mid 1972 when the change over to Lenco's started. At the time 833 was being used by all the GM cars and breakage was not the primary reason most teams changed. It was the reducton in ET for the average driver. Most gained well over a tenth. Most except Ronnie Sox who actually ran slower with one. The Pro Stock cars were in the 9.0 Et range and at 3000lbs .That converts to about 77HP. 9,000 RPM launches were common. In today's world with slipper type clutches I think they could handle more than that
home of the Sox and Martin Hemi Duster

Never had a problem with the 833 2nd gear but, input shaft , out put shaft and third gear and cluster gear . When the hp gets high enough the 3rd gear will push away flexing the input and output shaft causing one big mess. Liberty Gears warned me about it, ask me how I know that it's true. It took me 3 times to get it though.
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

I have heard the ratings at 500ft/lb for the 23 spline and 600- 650 for the 18 spline...however, I would definitely not try pushing 600 without an adjustable clutch...even in the lower power ranges, an adjustable clutch will only help with the life of the transmission And I personally wouldn't go much by what Ronnie Sox and the other 9 second cars back then were doing...You have to remember those transmissions were coming apart probably almost after every event to redress the pro shift or slick shift mods, and anything else that needed to be fixed probably was...As much as I respect that, do i think that an A833 can last with 800hp today? nope, not unless your tearing it down after every pass to see if everything is good but thats just me I love my 23 spline, but im lucky if im making 320 horsepower to the wheels
