is the float arm on a fuel sending unit longer on a e body compared to a b body? or better yet, what is the difference between the 2 fuel sending units. i think the restoration shop i brought the car to put in the wrong sending unit, i cant get a full reading on it, when i take it out and test it it works fine, but the arm seems way too long for a b body gas tank.i think the float arm is hitting the top of the tank. thanks

i take it out of the car and it works fine, put it back in and it reads a little less than 3/4" full of gasup to the top. whats the chance of the float hitting the top of the gas tank inside?

whats the chance that you are raising it to the exact same height outside the tank that it's going to inside the tank ???

Second pic
that looks like a e body one. seems to me that the float is hitting the top of the gas tank because the float rod looks awefully long. is there a chance all these chinese made sending units which everyone is buying are having the same problems. i noticed that alot of guys are having the same problem with malfunctioning gas gauges.

what you need to do is fill the tank, find where the gas gauge reads. run the tank down low so you can remove the unit.
Connect the unit to the sending gauge wire and move the arm to the top. did it read full? if so, your in luck- just bend the arm lower so the float doesnt hit the top of the tank when its full.

that wont work because it messes up the empty side and then the arm wont hit the stop tabs. if only i could shorten the float rod, then it would work.

no , it's a SERIOUS question , you are ASSuMEing that it's hitting the top of the tank , unless you have actually LOOKED INSIDE with the tank installed in the car and full of fuel how do you truly know ???
just bend the rod , it's not that hard to do .

john, you canonly go so far with gas with the sending unit removed otherwise the gas is going to pour out the hole, unless im missing something here, im lucky to have a 1/4 gas in it without the sending unit in place. dont know how i can check it with a full tank of gas!!!

You could cut a hole in the trunk floor and the top of the tank to look in , don't cut the top off above the float , make the hole big enough to get your head in and wear swim fask so you can see the float ...
All the time you wasted about this you could have tweaked the float arm and rechecked it .... twice ...

I have the same problem... reads only 3/4 full. John, if I don't have a swim mask, will goggles and a snorkel work?
One red car, one yellow car.

Make sure your snorkel has a viton ball or else it will soften in the gas and stick.
