Up in the North and Far Away
Hi

I am going to freshen the 440 that was rebuild last summer for 69 Charger R/T. With current setup it was capable only for 12,7/108 at 1/4 mile with street tires. My target was to go low 12's.

I have planned to change the current cam to a hydraulic roller. Anyone else having a similar motor with hydraulic roller or what would be your recommendation for this combo?

Intended Use: Street/Strip, few times per season at the drag strip.
Weight of the Car: 4100
Power brakes, should have some vacuum for the booster
Transmission: Automatic
Stall Speed: 3000
Gear Ratio: 3.73
Engine: #matching 440, .055 over
Compression Ratio: 10:1
Intake Manifold: Edelbrock RPM
Cylinder Heads from 440 Source, unported
Rocker Arm Ratio: 1.6
Carb: 850 cfm Demon, mech. secondaries
Hedman Headers 1 3/4"
2½" full length exhaust with X pipe
Current cam: Comp XE284H
Intake Duration@.050: 240
Exhaust Duration@.050: 246
Intake Duration: 284
Exhaust Duration: 296
Intake Valve Lift: 0.541 with 1.6 rockers
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.544 with 1.6 rockers

I have heard horror stories about 440 Source hydraulic roller lifters and also from Comp Cams hydraulic roller lifters.
What would be a better alternative than the two mentioned roller lifters?

Btw. just when writing this got email from Tim @ Lunati and he recommended their 60313 cam for this combo.

Anyone having earlier experiences from that hydraulic roller cam?
I had thought a little smoother because of the power brakes.

I have two motors that have Comp Cams hydraulic lifter cams in them, 452 C.I. ported big valve 906 heads with the XE 285HL cam, Eddy Performer RPM and a Holley 950 HP and a 464 C.I. (3.91 stroke) 440 block with stock Eddy RPM heads and a six pak, it has the XE295HL grind in it. Both motors run well on pump gas, both motors ran low 11s and the six pak motor ran high tens in good weather cork up on Oregon pump gas, motor only My car does not have power brakes and it does have a looser, smaller converter with 4.10 gears and a 3 inch exhaust system. Keeping all of that in mind if I was you with your car I would probally buy the Comp Cams XR286HR-10 cam (maybe the XR292HR-10 if your willing to put a bigger 3 inch exahust sytem all the way back to the exhaust exit ) and get a set of Crane Hydraulic lifters My Duster weighs 3450 lbs with me in it at the track , I run it corked up with the air cleaner on, motor only,(always) on pump gas only One thing to keep in mind on idle vacume is if you turn the idle speed up in gear it will have more vacume the higher you set the RPMs

I was shooting for 11.60's and ended up w/ 11.39 so far, My set-up isn't much more aggersive than yours. .030 over 11.2:1 440, h-beam rods ross pistons, ported stage VI heads, 582/588 comp cams solid roller, 1.5 H/S rockers, 1 3/4 headers, stock MP 6-pack, Turbo Action 3800 stall and 3.91's. Car runs great on the street pulls 7-8 lbs of vacuum at idle and managed about 12mpg on the way to and from the track. Your build should get you into the 11's

i'm guessing you mean 7-8 inches of vacuum and that you don't have power brakes?
