Hi All,
First the basic question, followed by a brief background explanation for those interested/curious:
Q: In relation to the top of the oil pan (i.e. where the pan meets the block at the pan gasket) can anyone tell me the correct position/measurement for the dipstick full mark? In other words, in inches, how far below the top of the pan should the maximum oil fill line be on a 440?
Brief background: After my RV 440-4 was rebuilt in 2008 it seems the dipstick (actually the stock ~3ft dip cable) tube was bent, incorrectly positioned, or both, leading me to add *way* too much oil for the past ~35K miles. Right now the dipstick full mark is essentially at the top of the pan, so I want to adjust it down to where it should be.
TIA for any responses!
PS Photo of the beast in question...

What I would do is fill your old pan up with 7 quarts of water and eye-ball the inside of the pan on where that puts you. When you are mixing-up diff pans with diff tubes and dip-sticks that can be a rats-nest. You might have to pull the pan and eye-ball the whole combo .... 10 quarts ?... ...maybe you got a SS pan !

Thanks for the tip Doc! I balanced the old pan, filled it with 7qts of water, and took measurements from the top of the pan to the water (1 1/2 inches) then from the bottom of the windage tray valley to the water (just under 1/2 in.). Photos attached.
If 1/2 in below the windage tray valley looks/sounds like the correct maximum fill level for the oil (<==that would be the key question!) then I believe my question about where to position the dipstick has been answered, and I'll set it accordingly.
Re. the capacity of my "new" pan, it must be an 8 qt pan at least, as it is 1.5 inches deeper at the deep end/sump, and 3/4 in. deeper in the shallow end. If indeed it is an 8 qt pan, with and extra qt for the filter this would bring the total engine oil capacity to 9 qts, which I will of course confirm (and post back) once I get the pan off.
Thanks again for the responses and advise!!

What year trucks used a front sump? I thought that only RVs used the front sump.
It's an RV... 1976 Winny Brave named Pandora. Here she is on the dyno at Westech...

I picked up a straight and clean front/truck sump pan
I'm not trying to be critical. I just read this and wasn't sure. Trucks and their parts interchange is new to me. I've been a car guy for all my life but just started tinkering with these trucks....

Does the front sump use a traditional path for the dipstick ie: thru the block near the motor mount?
I believe so: driver's side, through the block, just under the motor mount.
