My '63 core support:
Hard to see but the first one was mis-stamped so they stamped it again!

My '71 Barracuda, despite being all orignal paint and never having been apart, had no VIN anywhere on the core support.

Very good point. The block is easy to read fortunately. As for the trans they'd be in the same shoes I was in...and it didn't matter that much to me since everything else was so original. Talking to the original owner added confidence that it was the original trans. I'll just take a sharpie and write the #'s on it and I plan to leave the #'s as is.

I just saw a 70 Hemi Cuda with numbers stamped on the rough casting right ABOVE the machined pad. Faint but readable. And... it turned out to be number matching motor, std bore. That owner was OE bearing and all. I heard of a 69 340 Swinger with number stamped on the oil pan rail lip. They missed the motor entirely.
