400 hp at least three different ways. Also with that free 318 block (I've been given three) you install a 4" crank for a 390 or so shortblock and stick on a set of 360 or Magnum heads and you're at 400 hp with a bagful of torque.

if you have a block thats thick enuff, hensley performance can take em to a 4.00 bore and stroke em to a 402 and dyno's at 498 hp with eddy heads and ross pistons.can't recall compression tho.mine makes about 350 hp with ported j heads,.030 over,kb 9.1 flattops and a crane 284/480 cam and air-gap intake with a 650 dp.run low 9.30's in the 1/8 with 2500 convertor and mufflers and 4.56's in the rear in my 3700 lb(with me in it) truck.with more stall and sticky tires,9.0's and maybe 8.90's

No real numbers on mine, so I dont know the output, bit I'd guess it's around 300hp for pretty cheap

Magnum engine, EFI, heads shaved .020, 220 duration cam w .512 lift on a 114 LSA. M1 single plane intake, and headers

With a bigger cam and heads that flow, I bet 400 is reachable... But again, dollar for dollar, start w a 360!!

If you got a 318, use it. If starting fresh, hit the yards for a magnum 5.9 lots of vans, full size trucks, jeeps, and durangos had 5.9s in them. Finding one in a yard should be easy and fairly cheap

i agree.im basing my numbers off my weight and et.plus desktop dyno put around there.just so much fun beatin stangs with a 318 "work truck" as i call it.not bad times for a 12 year old motor i have totally beat the heack out of.

Poly, LA, or Magnum?

Here is a 318 build I once thought about doing:

318 engine square decked to 9.590" deck height, stock 3.31" stroke and 6.123" length rods.
KB Icon 844 forged flatop pistons, 3.950" bore, 0.040" head gasket, approx 11:1 compression with 52cc heads, 0.040-0.042" quench distance.
RHS/Indy or Iron ram magnum heads, full ported, would like to see about 300 cfm?, milled to 50-52cc chamber volume. Hughes is about $2K for the heads?
1.6:1 rocker arms, 3/8" pushrods,
Comp MM series solid #6589 intake 297/271/0.669", #6588 exhaust 293/267/0.658", 112 lsa, installed around 106 degrees?
Edelbrock Victor intake, and holley 950 HP carb.
Estimate HP = 574 @ 7,000 RPM, 469 ft/lbs @ 5,500 RPM.
Estimate cranking cylinder pressure = 157 psi (intake closing @ 74.5 degrees ABDC.) with the 0.040" quench it should run on pump gas?
TTI 1-3/4" step headers.

sounds like a good combo, but I'd guess the simulated power to be ~ 10% high....1.44 lb-ft per CID is very tough to do without a power adder.

Is this for more of a performanc builde build or more of a budget?

Imo it's worth starting with more cubes always if star all possible...especially since core 360s are pretty cheap.
