Because we (racers) want to go faster all the time. Same reason the big block guys build them.

You name the road and its on...
Road???? What the heck are you talking about? What are we going to talk about next. NOS. I love when a guy builds a small block at about 10 times the cost of a big block and still has to add a power adder. My engines are built by ME in MY garage with off the shelf parts.
yea i love when a guy spends 12.000$ on a set of predator heads,in a tube chassis car that weighs 2500lbs and does 8.30's u got an 8.30 car? bring it to etown and watch how many people will race u with small blocks...ps i dont believe u have an 8.30 car either..lol
My point. You can make a 340 or any SB run it will just cost you a butt load of money. And forget about using one in a 3800 lb B-body. You can run 10's in a heavy b-body w/ a stock stroke 440 w/ good off the shelf heads, small roller or 600ish solid cam, 4000 stall and 4.56's. Small blocks are fine and yeah they can be fast but at what cost? If you are building a bracket car and looking for 10.90's and don't have a deep wallet I'd think the best route to go is w/ a BB. The guy isn't talking about running 8's spinning his junk to 7500. He wants a weekend beater. Shoot I'd bet w/ a decent tune you could get a 440 into the 10's w/ an old school 509 and iron heads.
I used to have a 380 cu in 11.5 to 1 eddy headed stock block eagle rods that would go 10.70s on pump gas and 9.70s on c-12 and 200 shot.I didn't have alot of money in that setup. Got crank new closeout mopar 500, and got the eddys used 800. So I bought eagle rods and got the machine work done witch is pretty much the same big or small block. So I had about 4500 in whole motor to go 10.70s in a 3350 lb a body.
i sold those heads for $800. should have kept them though. had my hours cut in the dark hours of the bush era

The Small block guys always have to throw in their and ruin everyones fun. Read the thread title and move one, just like I do when I see a small block under the hood of a Mopar.

Anyone can beat 8.67 1/4 mile time and 156 mph with a 440+060 build and 3.75 stroke ?
I helped a good friend build a 440+060 a couple of years ago. All parts for the short block was bought from Scott Brown, besides a crane cam and an Eagle 3.75 crank he already had.
Stock RB block+060, with Eagle 3.75 crank Pistons Ross 13:1 custom Rods K1 steel, stock length Cam Crane superstock grind IR-276/4714-2S-12 int. 0.707(1.5) exh. 0.670(1.5), dur. 276 at .050 Heads Indy 440-1 mildly ported with manley severe duty 2.20 Carb custom 1250 dominator on a 440-1 intake.

Post them up, I'm looking to get 10.90's in a 3000 LBS car
Calm down small block guys we still like younz. Now back to the original poster. It doesn't take a lot of work to build a 440 to run 10.90's in a 3000# car. 30 years ago before we had all the go fast products that are available now. I used this combo to run 9.80 in a 74 duster that weighted 2900# with me in the seat. 2900# total weight .030 over 440 with TRW forged dome pistons Stock rods (direct conection bolts, shot peened, polished beems) stock forged crank 750 comp cams roller cam Weiand tunnelram with two 750 holley carbs (76 jets summer-78 jets fall) 4:56 rear gear 727 trans 14-31-15 goodyears superstock springs (001-002)
Pretty simple build but with the parts available now its crazy not to use a set of h-beem rods and an after market crank. Or you could go with a 4.150 crank and really blow those small blocks away.
or u could go with a 340 block 40 over,10.5 compression,4" crank,750 hp carb,255/255 @50 588 lift FLAT TAPPET bullit cam..in a 3200lb dart sport with 3500 stall conv,and do 10.80's and street drive to the beach
