The Comp XE268H cam will work just fine in a stockish 383. Yes, you can hear it tapping away because of the fast ramp lobes, but it's no big deal. I ran the XE262H which is one step down from the 268, this was with stock heads and rockers and steel shim head gaskets. It was a tapper too, but I liked it. I now run a Hughes cam.
What type of exhaust/manifolds/headers, rear gears and transmission will you be running? That will make a difference on which cam is best to run.
Stock exhaust manifolds, stock 727, (I may go with a trans go kit) 323 gears, edelbrock 1407 carb (750 cfm)
Do yourself a favor and lose that carb , you'll be happier in the long run , it's got a bad setup from ebrock and requires drilling of passages to fix it , if you are lucky .
Any recommendations?
