I didn't go through the whole post so this might be old info- I run a shroud that is only 3/4 inch from the fins ,using a pusher fan. Works great. Gets cooling air to all the fins, really helps over a setup that doesn't. I would bet that down to 1/2 inch would really improve things. Just be sure the shroud is as air tight to the fan as you can make it.
