Sometimes that converter drops into the pump real easy. Sometimes it doesn't want to align everything (converter stator, turbine, pump lugs, etc). Turn and retry, retry, retry, then it just drops in for no reason.
After making sure the converter is all the way into the trans, I put a wrench across it to hold it while I install the trans in the car. This stops the converter from falling out and losing alignment. As I recall, a 7/16" combination wrench with the box end bolted to the lower dust shield hole and the open end against the converter does the trick. After the trans is in the car, remove the wrench and install the converter to flex plate bolts.
I learned a new trick today. Now if I can only remember it when the time comes. Hopefully in a couple of weeks! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/luck.gif)
