It's more effort but the correct and only way to address the issue at this point is as everyone has suggested,
Pull the distributor and oil pump drive. Install a mechanical gauge and run the pump with a priming rod and drill motor. the correct direction is CW. (clockwise) twocents beer

When pulling out my distributor and intermediate shaft, I find it easiest to take a quick pic with my cell phone to determine the clocking for easy reference to put it back together.



Just roll the engine around to TDC #1. Look at the rotor so you don't end up 180 out. Slot in the drive will be parallel with or slightly off parallel with the crank, pointing towards #1 cylinder.

Sharpie mark will get you close but timing should be reset.
