To simplify things .

You will need to pull the distributor anyway, so bolt up the pump, button up the pan, put oil in it and before you reinstall the distributor use a pump priming tool (length of 5/16 hex stock, spin it CW for a small block and it will prime the engine for you.

Only reason to turn the engine over would be to get oil up to the rockers on a NEW build, no real need for what you are doing.
