I bet used cores are almost impossible to find. A budget 2000 - 2500 like you are looking for is probably made from a stock converter. How many of those could still be around? Spend 2 or 3 times as much for a good converter that is made for your application and you will be much happier. You CAN have both higher stall AND far less slippage in a good modern converter. Better performance and better drivability at the same time. Win Win.
