Hughes torque converters

Any one have experiance with the brand
I know there decent with other items but I’ve got a new 2500 stall converter (440 based)
That I wanna use

Good or should I go elsewhere. This is not. Race car
Just a mild street car I’m using it for

I want a stable idle and don’t want the car to push through the brakes like this stock converter is trying to do

I’m using their 24-25 HD that I put in last year behind my @9.6cr 440-6 3.55 8 3/4…runs good👍

I've got a 3500 stall 904 unit. It worked good for me. I'm putting that engine/trans in a street car and that's a little too high for my liking on the street. I was looking around at Summit Racing for a Hughes 2000-2500 stall and found out that they now charge a $100 core for all their converters. I didn't see that any other converter manufacture was doing that.

I bet used cores are almost impossible to find. A budget 2000 - 2500 like you are looking for is probably made from a stock converter. How many of those could still be around? Spend 2 or 3 times as much for a good converter that is made for your application and you will be much happier. You CAN have both higher stall AND far less slippage in a good modern converter. Better performance and better drivability at the same time. Win Win.

I've run one before, a 3000 stall. Worked great. It sounds like the right fit for what you want, and you have it. Absolutely no reason not to run it.

I put one in a diesel and it was made with a defect. It chewed the edge off the lockup clutch. They wouldn’t do anything for me. No call tag , no payback for any of the trouble once they had it in hand and acknowledged it was a manufacturer error. No new one to stick in to keep the truck from being down. The trans shop didn’t have room to leave it undone. Best they would do after the fact was a convertor “at cost” after I complained at the mess being mishandled.

I had to have the truck back and a stock reman went in while this mess unfolded. I wanted to keep using a better converter, but to this day the truck isn’t as good as it could be thanks to them not sending me one to stick in as the junk one came out. I told them that was it for them getting my money or recommendation to anyone. They will leave you hanging.

I am not a fan.

Any particular reason

l know lots of NHRA class racers bought and tried them back in the 1980s when they first opened and started making and selling converters, not many where happy with them
Hi Po and race Converters have a really big need for highly skill machine work and tolerances being built, not every shop can do that time after time
i have never bought or use one of theirs based on that, maybe their good on some other brands beside Mopar converters

I bought a converter from them. Their total recomendation. I never thought the car ran as strong as it should have. Called Paul Forte, got his recommended converter and the car picked up 7 tenths. I had that converter freshened and tweaked by FTI and I was also very happy with them.

The late 1970s up to the mid to late 1980s, I made the mistake of buying one and trying to use it It was horrible
Sent to a local good converter guy in SO CA and he fixed perfectly

I, we, (I was helping Steve and Linda Myers) started NHRA drag racing in NHRA "stock" class in 1973, we approach Art Carr and several other converter and tranny companies in SO CA for a full or partial sponsorship.
Art made us a deal on sponsoring us on the tranny maintenance for that year (1973 or 1974, CRS) if we bought one of his 8-inch race converters. That converter was .3 to .4 ET slower than the stock 11 inch Street Hemi converter and 3 to 4 MPH slower in the 1/4 mile also, what a piece of Shitt
We messed around with him for a full year on that converter and finally bought a Rossi converter and picked up near .5 ET and most of the lost MPH from the stock converter
I ended up buying a GER for a friend for his SB and testing in one my BB bracket cars, it was no good, ended up taking it to Munsiger and he fixed up good
My message is buy the best converter you can get, not any of the cheaper ones

My cousin and I both had GER converters in our Buicks in the early 80s. We had good luck.

I used one in Trans Am I built for a buddy in 92. It was junk. I think they went under about then.


Now I used Coan, PTC or ATI.

I am running an old Fairbanks, biught new back in mid 80 Modified Hemi freshener her up by Turbo Action. Never a problem.
I sent my J Converter to Turbo Action and had it freashened too. But have not run it yet.
Their reverse vavle body works. Did good steels, clutches, a and lots of billet.
But think good parts,are worth it in the long run

In a 2400-2500 stall speed
Nothing special

It got shipped quickly and delivered on time

Problems arose when I picked it up (box) the
Converter was just sitting loosely in the box

It had no packing material ect. Just rolling around ect…

I checked it out good. Doesn’t appear to be pre owned in any way
But hell who knows
