If it was me I'd stay on I5 rather than come across the mountains. Even I5 can be tricky this time of year. I got nailed by a monster snowstorm in Weed, CA a few years back this time of the year. Barely survived that one. Once I got past Weed the sun was out and it was 70 degrees but going up the hill into Weed there was 10 inches of snow on the freeway and people were stuck right and left. I'd never send my kids over the mountain route unless they were driving a four wheel drive and knew how to use it.
