If your track preps decent, then I'd look into a radial.

I haven't seen a car that didn't go faster w/ a stiff sidewall slick compared to a standard sidewall. Granted, every time I've seen this done it was on a car faster than a 1.4 sixty foot.
It was my understanding from years ago that a "W" tire had the same stiff sidewall...in a M/T anyway.
