You need a specific deck and head finish to use MLS gaskets. I had a good discussion with Cometic about that and they are quite adamant about it.
You are exactly right, MLS gaskets are made out of stainless steel, very tuff, but they do not conform at all, head and block have to be straight and smooth. With a surface finish a lot smoother than what most old muscle car engines were from the factory. I have had this talk with several of my customers, price of gaskets, block and head machine work, most decide to stick with felpros.
