since an A500 was mentioned behind a 383, how much HP and torque can one of those handle, and what was used to adapt the A500 to a big block ?

I would definitely go 904-based transmission given the first gear ratio options and less parasitic drag.
I learned one thing quickly after owning my first 4 speed 318: the 727 is a power-sucking turd. I've had 318's and 360's with 727-based transmissions (3 speed and 4 speed od's) and they subtract a noticeable amount of horsepower.
