That sounds like my son. He has had SRT-4 Neons for years. He had one that would actually keep up with a mild 360 powered Scamp I had a few years ago.
Whenever he starts to rag on me about carbs and big cams I tell him he is half the man I hoped he would be since he likes 4 banger stuff.

The identity crisis that comes with those is always fun.
Say-

And they go:
"IT'S NOT A NEON!!! IT'S A SRT-4, YOU IDIOT! It's a highly developed factory high performance vehicle!"
Then.....the first time they beat somebody....they go:
"Ha ha, you just got beat by a NEON, the biggest loser turd car EVER! ".
I also notice when they try to sell them, they are always special high performance vehicles.....
