What rear and carrier do you have?
If it is an 8 3/4 with a 742 carrier you just zap the nut off with a air wrench and go for it. Then tighten with the air wrench. The torque is supposed to be something like 240 foot pounds.
If it is a 489 carrier then it has a crush sleeve and you should attempt to get the nut back exactly where it was or very slightly tighter. I would mark the nut before removing.
Its a dana 60.
