Well, techinically no, there is no oil sealed by the gasket. However, I have seen stains like that from leaking exhaust and even intake ports. The exhaust side leaks a mixture of oil/carbon/condensation/unburnt gas and the intake side will leak a mixture of gas/oil/carbon.

Don't be afraid even if it is a head gasket. Changing gaskets on a Slant looks intimidating, but it ain't brain surgery. Biggest thing to do is before you start soak all the manifold nuts with PB Blaster for a few days. It will make life a lot easier.
