Yeah I think you need the pump off, BB newbie here (been on SB's for decades) but a 451 is in the works & a 535 (RB) is on my mind cuz I fell into a primo 440 block. Just me I'd drill prime for a start then prefill the filter then reprime then prime without the filter on (as needed), anything to avoid taking the pan off. Holler how it goes
