The easy way is to remove the number one spark plug and with your finger over the hold slowly turn the engine over till you feel compression coming up then very slowly bring the piston to TDC. NOW install the intermediate gear with the slot as close to parallel as you can get it. Install the distributor and take not of where the rotor is pointing and install the distributor cam and install the plug wires starting with number one where the rotor is point ind then follow the firing order counter clockwise around the cap. Crankshaft and cam positions will take care of themselves.
