strange thing , i have only driven my car about 50miles on the road, 68 dodge coronet-440/727, i have changed the alternator to square back, changed out the voltage reg. to a 70's style, did the madelectric wiring , no amp meter, amp bypass and put a volts meter, i did this about couple of months and maybe driven the car off and on 2 times to the store up the road about 5miles i cranked up the car tonight, drove 5miles to store , put gas in , drove back home everything was fine, turned off car, got back in the car about 5mins later and pulled in garage, notice only 12volts on meter, i got out got my tester, and the alternator not charging like it should per the tester, i turn the car off and checked all the connections, cranked the car back up, everything is fine, the volt meter up past 14volts, i cut the car off and cranked about 3 or 4 times no problems, anybody have an opinion on this, what wld cause this? and now running fine, i am wondering if this is a alternator problem waiting to happen on a long cruise night

Got a loose/intermittent connection somewhere in the field circuit. check the terminals/connections and the brushes etc for (hopefully) something obvious plus check the bulkhead
live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

Update- battery no good well, i took the car out for a short drive about 5miles up the road and i stopped and talked with a friend, when i got back in the car, it almost did not crank, the starter dragging, i got back to the house turned off the car, come back to put in the garage, the car when not crank the inside lights all dim, the volts down to almost nothing, tested the battery, showing bad battery, so i took the battery out of my truck and put in the car, fired right up, all the readings fine apparently when i had all my voltage reg. problems and the car ran at 16 to 19volts, it must have fried the battery thanks for the input
