Just wondering if anyone else ran into this b/4. My dads 68 road runner had axles in it when he bought it, but had a lot of play in them. Did not think much of it, car was not running anyway. Guy he bought car from had a 65 383 he put in it, we went thru motor, got it running, now new axle bearing were put in and the adjuster will screw all the way in and still have 1/4 inch or more play. Looking thru tech archives I found shorter B body axles used up to 1967. Sure enough we measure and they are the shorter ones. Anyone ever run into this? Is there any other fix other than axles for the 68-70 model B body? Just curious. Thanks.

Do you have the "buttons" that go into the rearend between the axles and the cross shaft.

You migh be able to use the green bearings, as they do not require the adjuster. I am not sure if your axles have enough spline engagement though. Dr. Diff would know. You would not have a problem to get a couple of the right length axles for a reasonable price. You could narrrow your rearend housing also, or find an early housing. I have some myself, but you would still need new bearings. PM if you are interested.

DTS offers the buttons. That is most definitely your problem. A LOT of people don't/forget to put them in.

Since the OP measured the axles and verified they are the wrong length for the housing, missing buttons aren't the problem.

Going to Green bearings would eliminate the thrust problem but you'd be missing 5/16" of spline engagement on each axle; not good IMHO.
