Ok, my brothers truck...1997 Ram 1500 5.9L.
Ran perfect but had a leaky head gasket, when putting it back together installed Comp cam (one cam before having to change computer), new lifters, new injectors, new TPS, new cam sensor, new crank censor, valves ground, a very meticulous craftsman. Now, it starts, runs, and idles perfect, back it up and pull it forward runs perfect, take it out on the street and drive to the stop sign and it dies, starts right up, drive it to the next stop and it dies, if he feathers the peddle it will keep running, drives it to work and gets 16mpg, if he slows to a stop at any time and it dies. When it starts to die as he is coming to a stop the rpm will go smoothly past the idle range right down to zero each time, it doesn't just die. He swapped computers with another 97 and does the same thing. He lives in Iowa and I live in Missouri, so this is a long distance diagnosis challenge.
We need help, please ask questions and I will try to answer...
Russ:)

so 2 possible answers. the stock answer is IAC is bad, dirty or the hole is gummed up.

I would start there.

SEcond possible answer is, as I recall, there is some "calibration" to do when replacing the TPS.

You have to do something odd so the computer will recognize the new tps. I don't know for sure, I just remember something funny like that.

idle air control valve.
it is on the throttle body.
on the back I think. bolted on, so it can be removed and cleaned. the hole it taps in to should be cleaned as well.

Good morning Andrewh! Sorry, I didn't know that one:) Yes, he tried cleaning the IAC and that didn't help, so he relaced it, and that didn't help:(

Sounds like a dirty throttle body. I see it all the time as when the battery is unhooked the IAC memory is lost and the PCM fogets the IAC steps. Best thing is to look at the IAC steps with a scanner (dont think thats the newer 2 wire style that dont use steps). The PCM is programmed to go to a certain amount of steps as per the eng temp and it doesn't know that the throttle body is dirty and it needs many more steps to keep it running. With the eng running warmed up and in park with everything turned off the IAC steps should be around 10 to 20. If its high like 60 or 70 the throttle body is dirty.
Or just clean the throttle body and throttle blade and see if it helps. Ron

Thanks for looking at this Ron:) My brother is a super clean freak, worse than me. He cleaned the throttle body to look like new. I feel your scanner idea may be key here. I will ask him if has had this done. He took it to the best, we live in the boonies, dodge dealership around and they said nothing was wrong. He needs another opinion and have the IAC/PCM rechecked per your suggestion. I will tell him.
Thanks!!!!
