I just restored my car & when assembling I ran auxiliary wiring for my trunk release, third brake light, & electric fuel pump. All wiring is 14G with soldered and shrink wrapped connections. I've killed two 30A fuel pump relays in less than 2 years. Pump is a new Holley blue. Tank is sumped with a pre-filter before & one after the pump. Should I go 40A, or is my pump suspect? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

Get rid of the "pre filter", It's causing problems, I promise you. What size line do you have feeding the pump?

Your trying to suck the gas uphill, not the best thing. That much line it should be #10. Pump should be down from the feed. In the wheelwell? Shouldn't be why your blowing fuse though, that's another issue, I beleive. What's the micron rating of that filter?

as someone else posted, 14 gauge is fine for the control wiring for a relay, but it's not big enough for running the pump. I would use at least 12 gauge, 10 ga wouldn't hurt if you're running 20+ feet of wire to hook to power.
Agreed!! I always run 10 gauge for the supply on an elec. pump, 8 gauge wouldn't hurt either, 14 gauge is way too small.

Check the pump amperage before and after you pull the pre filter. That pump should only pull 3 amps, if you are pulling high amperage then it could be either b4 or aft filter, a pressure regulator malfunctioning, or the pump windings or brushes going bad. See what combination causes the least amp draw and go from there.
Like the man says check the pump amperage draw before you condem anything else and go from there. If it draws to much then unhook the lines and check it again with just the pump free wheeling as it should draw real low amps free wheeling. I only run 3/8 line with the Holley red pump and I use a pre filter and one at the carb and have never had any problems. 14 gauge is all I ever use for Holley pumps that draw less the 10 amps as thats more then heavy enough for a draw under 10 amps. Good luck , Ron
