Looking at recommendations for replacement oil pump. The advice I had is from back in the day and was to use a high volume. Engine is a 440, 0.030 over. 12:1 CR with TRW pistons. Main bearings are half groove. Cam tops out at 6000 rpm. Have 8 quart pan for it. I have had high volume pumps on engines in the past with no ill effects. I am just not sure what the current thinking is now days. Any recommendations on a pump?

High volume.

Usually the high volume pump has pretty good pressure too. The HV pumps are a bit deeper/thicker so you may need slightly longer oil pump to block bolts?

You could use a standard pump for what you describe, or a standard pump with a high pressure spring. A HV certainly won't hurt anything.

If you haven't opened up the pickup to 1/2" then I'd run stock. I have seen some high volume pumps cavitate with the stock sized pickup tube. You mentioned having an 8 qt pan, so I don't think you have the small tube, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

If your up/running now post your pressures. Street or strip? I'd suggest a stock vol/psi if it will take care of you

Just curious, would a standard pump be ok for full groove main bearings? Thanks

Morning Tim, alot of variables go into it, bottom line is to use the thinnest oil/std vol & psi pump that will maintain a safe PSI for your eng/app. Idle can actually b low if it jumps up right when you goose it and on the high end for a dragger 8-10 psi per 1000 rpm is a safe ballpark figure. I'd b way more concerned w doing the proper internal mods rather than what the gauge shows at it's highest point when it exits the filter & goes up to the sending unit

nope.. f/m thin 3/4 groove mains marginal with stock pump, i did stock rebuilt on a hemi with full groove mains was not happy with hot oil pressure at all. 70lbs cold 30-32 lbs at idle hot, blue printed melings hv-63 fixed that, 85 cold 40-45lbs hot at idle

Generally yes with typical clearances and oiling.
