Anyone got experience with running over 11:1 on pump gas with the MP 590 cam in a big block (aluminum heads)? If so, what's the CR (and did you measure or guess), what's the installed CL of the cam (I think straight up is 104), what max advance did you run on ignition, and what was your cranking compression gauge reading?

Other pertinent details on you combo would also be appreciated.

Race gas blenders / octane boosters / E-85'ers need not apply, I'm looking for guys running straight 91 or 93 AKI pump gas.

Thanks!

Scott

that cam is pretty long in Dur.. think in the 265-268 range@.50..
I ran that cam with a 11:1 493 with mildly ported Eddy RPM's and it ran strong... If your running a stock stroke engine IMO the compression needs to be as high as you can achieve... It will only run bettter. Most say 12-12.5:1+ is idea.. Its just hard to get these compression numbers with stock heads without dome pistons, and shaved heads.

I would think with a 590 and alum heads ... that the MINIMUM CR you would want is 11 to 1 !

That camshaft is 271 @050.MP used to tell you it was 265,but they have updated the paperwork finally.
I ran that shaft in a stock stroke 440,9.8 to 1 actual.MP 452 aluminum heads,38 degrees total timing.My cranking compressiion was 165-170.
A good friend of mine runs the same setup,at 11.3 to 1 36 degrees total timing, unknown cranking comp.
Another racer I know runs his at 9.0 to 1 iron headed,38 degrees total.
We all ran(or still run)93 octane pump gas.
Keep in mind, the fuel may be different where you are, most everywhere around here has ethenol in it.
Even the car with the low compression/ iron heads runs real well, he ha one many races and championships in his car.
By the way,I ran mine mine at 104 intake centerline,so did my friend. Not sure on the other guy's build.

Friend had that cam in a 446 RPM eddies with 10 to 1 in at 100 and I'm sure he could have ran 87 but he put 94 in it. when we advanced the cam from 104 it picked up a couple tenths and he could leave 1000 rpm less torque at the line.

I ran a 263/271 ultradyne in at 102 for years with 11.75 to 1 SR heads on 94.
Your cranking compression is only going to be 185 ish and I assume a 4500 plus stall. as rpms increase octane requirements decrease.
I would say 93 your fine you may be able to ween it to 91.

This past year I ran 12 to 1 272/282 @ .050 on 94 same heads.

I'm using the Isky 8005A spring for this build, 135# on the seat and about 385# over the nose (1.6 rockers), but its a 520 and we won't be reving all that high. I think a lot of people use the Comp 928, puts about 160 on the seat and about 380 at lift.

My situation is that due to a couple of goofs I'm half a point higher on compression than I originally planned to be (11:1 with a catalog gasket), I've got CR choices of 11.1, 11.3 or 11.6 depending on the head gasket (11.6 is with the same gasket I originally planned on for 11:1!). I'm a little shy about the 11.6 on pump gas, so I'm looking for some confirmation / experience before I finish up the build.

On my cam with 906 the ultradyne 263/271 we used mopar 077 springs and they were about 150 on the seat sifted 6600 to 6800.

Then put on Indy SR's with the springs that come with them good to .650 lift think they were about 160 seat new and after 5 years were 150 ish and would shift it 7000 to 7200

On the 590 in my buddies not sure but they were a mopar spring
before buddy sold it we check and his seat pressure was 120 and it never floated at 7000 shifts but over the top they were almost 600 really multypied up.
used the stock eddie springs a first and they were fine?? good to .600 lift??

I run a .590 installed at 106-c/l. 1.6 ratio rockers,Stage-6 heads w/63cc. chambers.
I run 93 umleaded ONLY .
My compression comes out with a measured assembled engine at exactly 12.34cr.
#4 cyl. try and does detonate if I try to use a 2-step. But thats a manifold issue.

I run that cam straight up (104*) with 13.6:1 compression. I have Ross domed pistons, Stealth heads, Team G intake, 1050 Dominator (8896), MP roller tipped alum rockers w/ 1.5 ratio, and Sunoco 112 racing fuel. This combo is almost 600 hp and I did break a main cap after 300 passes. I put a main stud girdle on last week and ran this weekend, 10.49 in 1/4 and 6.56 in 1/8. When I advanced this cam 2*, it had way too much torque. I am running 35* timing
If you need any more info about mine, just ask, I'll help as much as I can.

I ran the 590 cam in my old car with Isky 8005a springs, cam in at 104, compression was 11.2:1, car was 3050# with me in it. It went 9.90's in the 1/4 at 136 MPH. Great street strip cam! I had 451 cubes and Eddy heads, M1 TR with 2 750's. Current owner has gone 9.77 thru the muffs!
