Changing over from manual steering on a 68 J code car, have the correct pulleys, have the correct Federal pump and brackets, Have a PS column as well but have a PS box out of a 68 Coronet. I've read in the Paul Herd "B" Body Resto guide:

(Hemi powered cars used special gearboxes. Even though they have the same 15.7:1 ratio of the standard power steering gearbox, no other gearbox will interchange. One gearbox type-listed as part number 2537737-was used all four years, thus all 1968-1971 Hemi steering boxes will interchange)


Can someone tell me if the Coronet box will work or not?

Like I said, the resto guide sez it won't work. Can someone tell me what the actual difference is between the standard PS box and the Hemi PS box?, I've found some descrepencies in the resto guide so like anything else, I need facts......

The box will work fine. You only need the hemi specific fitting on top of the unit. I can take a photo of it tomorrow...

Be careful about what you read in these books. They are OK for viewing, but most are severely lacking in technical and restoration accuracy.

I don't know why it wouldn't work,they are both B-bodies,and as far as the steering gear is concerned,the same car. I'm not sure if the pitman arm is the same from manual to power,but I'm sure some of the B-body guys will chime in.

How many letters in the name Jim? Oh yeah three.. How many letters in the word Bad (like crook) Oh look three... Try to remember this....

BTW That is a standard hydraulic fitting I have a bag of a dozen, they cost me about $4.25 each...

FWIW take the original straight adapter fitting out of your steering box & take it to a competent hydraulic shop & they can provide you a fitting & it will be cheap... There are two sizes of JIC used I believe the early was 1/4" & the late was 5/16" & I also believe the "O" ring boss fitting size is 5/16" but without measuring I wouldn't guaranty it....

I should have written a disclaimer that everyone here hates this guy.

I was only trying to give the op an "idea" of what he needed

I thought I used to see the 90 degree fitting for sale from alot of different vendors, but after a few searches I can't find anyone other than "Jims"

It's all good! I've never been robbed by Jim personally cause I've heard bad things about the operation dating back to the 80's & I don't feel like proving everyone right....

FWIW the original fittings were solid brass, all the new ones I've seen are steel...

Thanks guys, I used to work on forklifts for a living so hydraulics are nothing new to me and I may even have some of the fittings stashed away but now I know what I need, thanks guys...
