Will that unit or the A500 trans fit the tunnel?
You are more than likely going to have to cut on the car , i'n not sure if there is a difference between the OD section from the 500 to the 518. someone did post up pictrues of ribs on the side of the OD section being cut close to the case but I don't know if doing that will stop you from having to cut the Tbar crossmember some still.

I've been researching the 727 to 518 swap for a few weeks now and the 518 is really probably going to be the best bet if for no other reason than the OD is electrically actuated. With something like a superbell on a 700R4 or other off brand OD the slap stick would require an additional detent to engage all the gears. The 518 is also a whole lot better option than a gear vendor bolted on to the transmission. For what it’s worth to give you an idea on size here some pictures: Stock SB 727 518 And Gear Vendor

At one point the GV was the "hot setup" but that was simply becasue it was the only option out there that retained the 727 transmission. Floor pan modifications to get it in were pretty extensive.
The GV unit by itself usually cost more than a rebuilt 518 even without a core. Additionally depending on which version of the 518 you choose you can also get the Torque Convertor lock up feature.

Not to long back there was fellow that sold a '68-ish Valiant with an advertised 518 trans swapped in. The E-mail address with the add was (I think) Jarnos@msn.com. I thought he was possibly connected to the Vignogna (SP) family. This might be a good place to start seeking information?

Just to be clear on the option, there's no extensive floorpan mods in an E body using the Gear vendors..Only the electronic speedo convertor area may need a touch of help...
Maybe this is true with the current generation of GV units, My friend had what is known as a "first generation" GV unit. He had the unit in and out several times trial fitting, removing to bang on the tunnel for clearance and test fitting again. It was like trying to fit in cheapie headers.

I've performed the Keisler E/B body Auto+4 swap, no floorboard mods are needed, everything is included in the kit, the slapstik is retained, and converted to cable shift, you do have to disassemble the slapstik unit to install the new detent plate, but the shifter retains it original feature, just ads the O/D into the shift, you'll need to mod the factory transmission lines to tie into the braided SS lines that are now on the passenger side,...there is an addition of a TV cable (Throttle Valve) that must be used, basically like a kickdown linkage, but cable,...there is an onboard computer module also, that can be interfaced to reprogram line pressure, shift rpm range, band apply, etc,......the price has come down from it's inception, the final O/D ratio is .70
