The noise from my electric fuel pump is driving me nuts, so I am thinking of going back to a manual pump on my 360.
Back in the day, I ran a Holly chrome manual pump, but after several months of use, the pump arm and the eccentric were severaly worn. At the time I figured it was an issue with the pump and went to an electric pump.
After some careful thought, my educated guess is that the pump arm was worn due to an oiling issue, that is, the idiot that assembled the motor (me) did not put the bolts for the cam thrust plate in the right spots. Although the motor has been apart and reassembled since those early days, I am not sure if I reassembled it correctly, or even put the eccentric back on.
So, I think my next task is to tear down the front of the motor and have a look at the thrust plate bolts..Oh what fun! Somtimes doing things right is a real pain in the but!

If you can find one (don't know if Mancini still carries them or not), there used to be Moly coated Mopar Performance eccentrics that were lower friction than the bare steel factory piece.

Drill a ~1/4" hole in the cam plate in front of the pass oil gallery (thru the round rough dimed sized nub) and a 1/64" (.015") hole right behind it in the mini freeze plug capping the front of the horizontle main oil gallery (pull the plug and get a new one & drill/deburr it then drive it in. This'll put a pressurized squirt onto the chain/gears/eccentric as opposed to the 1/8" drip in the OE top pass bolt. High zinc oil & check that the pump is not binding/arm is square & as said a good eccentric

How exactly is your electric fuel pump mounted? It can make a huge difference in how loud it sounds?
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

Hmm...its a Mallory 140, mounted on the rear shock cross member. It is fairly quiet, but there is a constant hum, that is a little anoying on long drives. The whine drives my wife completely nuts!

Well, spent some time in the garage today pullign the water pump and timign cover off my 360.
Although it took a buch of time, it looks like it was the right call!
I found the fuel pump eccentric was worn badly, just like I expected, and it does not look like the hollow bolt is in the right spot. We at least the oil sliger was on there!
Here are some pics.
Well I have it all apart and will clean up the front of the engine and repaint the timign cover and water pump.
In all honesty, I really enjoyed beign out there workign away. Except that part where I realized what a poor mechanic I was in the past, I don't think any more that a quarter of the bolts I took out had any washers on them!!!!

Now's a good time to degree in the camshaft.
And I'd chuck that electric pump in the trash, it's probably pretty wore out from cavation anyway. Go back to a mechanicl pump and don't worry about noise and cavation(vapor lock) because I'd bet you don't have it plumbed right or with a large enough feed line. It's a street car right? and you want the wife to go with you sometimes? right?
I thought of that...But have never done it before, and do not have the tools. Can you degree a cam with the motor fully assembled???
I am hopefull that the mechanical pump will not have any vapour lock issue over the hot sumer months...but we will see. I may leave the electric pump hooked up just in case ( I have heard there are no issue runnign both) and only use it if need be.

The lower bolt on the driver side is supposed to hold a duct, which also guides in the unused lower hole on the passenger side. This duct takes oil leak from the front cam bearing and pours it to the fuelpump side (behind the gear, but maybe this oil is splashed around and onto the fuelpump lever). Please check this. And, these bolts do not use washers. Locktite them, do the same with the cambolt. My
Hmmm I will look into the duct.
Yeah no washers on the thrust plate bolts...But I had very few washers on the timing cover bolts, probably shoudl be though.
