It is probably for a '70.
There should be a partial VIN# on passenger side near oil pan.
Front surface of the block below driver's head will have assy. info (FW340P xxxx xxxx)

Casting date is not a 100% positive way to determine what it was.

i could not find any numbers on the pad-nor was there any numbers on the lt side of the block front either-which is unlike the other 340's i checked. Is it possible this block was not stamped, maybe it was a block that was bought over the counter

I have that engines BROTHER! My 340 block has that exact same date! I'll have to look to see if mine is a day or night shift.
I bought mine from a guy in my car club. The block is .030 and has replacement pistons. It came with a truck oil pan and a crank that was already .030 under! The main caps and windage tray were there though.
This motor was first planned to go into a 73 Dart Sport to make a 340 clone car. I ended up using a 360. I may use the 340 in a 71 Duster project later.

Is there any original paint left on the block or heads? If so, what color?

Sometimes you have to take a wire brush to that area of the front of the block just below the drivers side head to be able to read it. I have a 7-11-69 cast 340 block and it's still got factory orange on it.

I'm starting to see alot of marine engine take out's (Blocks) showing up for sale. Most have no vin #. Most have had a hard life. Check them out good. 340's was the upgrade for the 318 and then went to 360 mid 70's .Just thinking out loud.

Mine is blue. NOT a trace of red or orange anywhere. The block could have been totally stripped at one time and sprayed blue though. Hard to confirm since its 41 years old and has probably been passed around like a biker chick.
