hello, i found a rebuilt transmission from a 94 dakota with a 318 so it should have the 518 correct? and is it a good one to swap into my 69 dodge d100 with a 318? also is there a mount that i can use from the junkyard? and will the torque converter fit without mods to the engine?
thank you
Ryan

I rebuilt a 94 4x4 Dakota while back and it had the A500 in it.

A 500 is 904 based , 518 is 727 based , the easy way to tell is to look at the pan , just like looking at a 904 or a 727 ...

The best 518 for a preformance use will be a 518 nonlockup trans. These are more common in the 3/4 ton 89-90 trucks. Or trucks with a 360.

For putting behind a 318 in a pickup I think a lockup would be fine. I am not sure about the difference between hydraulic and electronic transmission control in a retrofit, though. John, care to elucidate?

A '94 Dakota with a 318 should have a lockup 518 (actually a 46RH).

Each year brought improvements in the 518 so the latest, which was '95, would be the best. The 518 converter will bolt to any 727/904 flexplate with the 10" bolt circle.

The transmission part number is stamped in the drivers side pan rail, just below the shift lever.

If the trans is lockup you will need to control both the OD and the converter; this can be done with simple toggle switches or pressure switches in the governor test port.

There appears to be too many digit 1's in the basic part number, PK521(1)18730 should be 52118730.

52118730 is a 518 from a '92 Dakota 4 X 2 with a 318.

yes your right on the numbers, so i guess my last set of questions are the mount? the only write ups ive read are on cars not trucks so will i have to fab a mount or will a stock one work? from the 94 dakota? will the torque converter bolt up right to my flexplate? and what is the honest mpg gain as the website says 30-40%??

You'll have to fab a mount, the converter will bolt to any flexplate with a 10" bolt circle.

Mileage gains? 30-40% seems unlikely.

You absolutely have to use one from 95 down. The 96 and up's are controlled by the computer. It's the 46RH you need, stay away from the 46RE.

well i should be fine on that part as the part number calls for a 92 dakota, but 95 and down uses a 3 wire plug, and up uses a 2 wire?

95 and older a-500 uses 3 wire plug.

95 and older 518 uses 3 wire plug or 2 wire plug if it's non-lock up.

96 and newer use a bigger plug with something like 10 wires.

My old 94 dakota 318 definately had an a-500 as does my currant 91 318 dakota.
