My book says use Dextron or Dexron Type A.
I don't believe that is manufactured anymore.
Does anyone know what I should use?
Thanks!

I'd suggest Dextron III. I think that's the latest version of it.

And since I'm old school & have run Type F in every Torqueflite I've ever built...... Newer Dexron has higher lubricating additive %.. Type F has less than standard old Dexron/Type A which means the clutches grab better...... B&M use to sell a special fluid they called "Trick Shift" it was Type F with blue dye in it... Stumpy may be Grumpy... But he's right...

On a fresh build from scratch(N) I'd go w F but to add some which I gathered was what he had in mind would you want to mix the two?

Go to a convenience store, The ATF they sell is Type A, the original Dexron, just read the label. Usually it's from Coastal. As for type F, the only time I tried that rick I lost all the friction material off my clutches and had to rebuild the trans, so be wary.

I used type F for years with no problems and so have a bunch of other guys I know. If you lost all the friction material then the clutches were badly made to begin with.
Yeah, that was the problem, I don't think so Tim.
I did a fluid and filter change on a perfectly running PB 727. Next day it starts slipping bad, barely got it home. Coincidence? I don't think so, BTW OEM friction material and every clutch was bare, if it was one or two, or even one drum's worth I might have thought otherwise. But when all of them go in a matter of an hour or so's drive time it's not the friction material.
Could the combination of fluids have caused the clutches go?

I agree, it wasn't the fluid (or combo thereof) that stripped em

For good and bad, its no longer available due to improvements and volume of sales. The bad part is there's too many new ATFs that seem to be maybe kindof backword compatible and its darn confusing. About 2/3 way down in this 2002 Motor Magazine article they summarize the differences to date (then).
Type F has the opposite characteristics than most of the other fluids. Many racers have used it in torqueflites for that reason. Since you're asking about stock replacement, lets move on to the Dexron family.
In brief, my conclusions are the 'best' most backword compatible ATF for a plain Dexron spec'd torqueflite are: Dexron VI (synthetic and generally most expensive) Synthetic spec'd as Dex III replacement Dexron/Mercon (least expensive) Multi-purpose (usually least expensive, but IMO these are a crap shoot and I'm not a gambler)
The newer ATFs usually have better oxidation resistance and low temperature viscosity. Whatever you buy, check the can (uh bottle) or the manufacturer that its compatible with Dex II or earlier.
Some bottles say compatible with all Chrysler transmissions. This is a bad sign. The needs of all Chrysler transmissions are not the same. Many do not take Dex III and earlier. There's long articles on this (see for example Allpar.com). The big change seems to be when ATF+3 and +4 were developed specificly for the new transmissions with control modules.

Let me lay it out for you and you tell me what the problem "really" was.
I did a fluid and filter change, which means I dropped the pan. I inspected the pan for anything out of the ordinary, there were some minor black deposits, minor as in I've seen them in any number of other fluid and filter changes I have done, before and since. I cleaned the pan, changed the filter, adjusted the bands, reinstalled the pan, filled the trans, let it idle in neutral to top off the system and inspected for leaks. Next day, I go to work, no issues, I finish work drive home and about halfway home the trans starts slipping, bad. I limp home (maybe 5 miles total). Drop the trans, pull it apart and NONE of my clutches have any friction material anymore.
This trans probably had well over a 100,000 miles on it at the time, I don't know for sure since I swapped it in to replace the stick I had, but more than 20k miles I put on it.
What was the problem, if not the fluid change? I don't care to experiment again since I really do not want to have to rebuild another trans.

If it'd been just some clutches, or even a drum's worth I'd probably agree, but all of them, both drum's worth. I cannot remember what the bands looked like, I know I replaced them too. Heck, it's been probably 17 years now. As it stands, i am not 100% sure and am not willing to retry it.
