I got this sample piston @ end of last week from Wiseco for evaluation.... This will be a new shelf stocking piston for them.

One of their engineers solicited info a while back on what was missing from the piston market for SB Mopar these days & I chimed in that I'd like to see another Dome offering. Every piston company out there had flat tops & Dish pistons but, Ross pretty much had a monopoly on the 4" Crank dome piston market, & their dome is a bit "clunky" & they are only offered in 4.07 bore which really limits you... The Ross piston is pretty basic, they took their 4" flat top & added a large 23 degree Chevy dome profile to it... was'nt alot of thought or effort in it...

The new wiseco has a much nicer SB Mopar specific profiled dome that will fit pretty much any aftermarket SB Chrysler head, B1-BA, Edelbrock, INDY, W2, W5 etc. This should fit any 18 degree SB head. I checked the dome this afternoon in an OOB Edelbrock 63 CC chamber head & clearance was fine.

The Dome displace +8 CC of total volume... For some examples of what this thing will do compression wise:

Typical 408, with 68 CC OOB CNC INDY head: ~13.2:1 compression
416 With 65 CC Edelbrock: 14.0:1

Finally have a decent piece to use off the shelf & can make race gas compression levels with these semi big chamber heads in the 65+ CC range so we don't have to cut the hell out of the deck of heads to build compression with a flat top or order customs to get a good dome piston.

The other 2 big benefits to this new piece to me is the 10 vertical gas ports & the .043"/.043"/3MM ring grooves Finally someone has brought today's technology & put it in an off the shelf piece.

Typical 1.46" CH, .984" pin diameter only (for now, hopefully .927" coming in future) Which will mean 9.583" deck height for zero deck. Should work good with most factory blocks out there unless they've previously been heavily decked in the past.

Skirts are coated, just like their Pro Tru line.

Valve relief depths are around .280" intake & .165" exhaust. The exhaust hopefully is going to get plunged a little deeper in future runs, but depending on head/cam, should be ok as long as the head has'nt been milled to death.

& Lastly, I'm glad they chose to offer them in a wide variety of bore sizes, Diamond is really the only other maker out there who seems to understand not everyone runs 4.03" or 4.07 bores. Finding a good useable 340 & even 360 these days is getting harder & harder, so having piston bore size limit your choices really hurts. These pistons will be avail in 4.03, 4.04, 4.06, 4.08, 4.10 Bore.

I've got a bunch of 4" crank bracket type motors running around out there with flat tops that I wish had these in them. Should be a great piece for future builds.

Kudo's to Wiseco for listening to what the consumers want & making a nice piece.

Looks great. I've never used Wiseco but I'd be interested in giving them a try on a future motor. I do think I'd only be interested in a Chevy piston pin though. I'd be hard pressed to find a reason to run a Mopar connecting rod in anything I build anymore.

So,,4.040" will be a shelf piston? This is good to know. Been waiting on some replacement pistons from Ross...4+ weeks. Maybe next boring will get Diamond pistons.

Yes 4.04 off shelf.

Would be nice if they jumped on the 4.250 bandwagon, the 4" one is is gonna loose steam.

I doubt that, the 4" is gonna be very popular for a long time. 4.25 has it's place & I'm building 2 of them right now, but so does the 4" & you gotta think about how many 4" cranks are out there already.

Until there is a relatively large selection of big stroke pistons off shelf from a variety of companies, the 4" stuff will remain the industry standard IMO. These companies have to make an educated guess as to potential unit sales when doing a piece like this & until they see big market for the bigger stroke stuff they not gonna make big stroke pistons off shelf.

Not every SB motor needs a 4.25 crank. Just like not every Big Block Chrysler needs a 4.50" crank... Just because costs same as a 4.25 or a 4.15.... they all have their place.

Excellent question...I thought about that today& then we got busy this afternoon with some other stuff & I forgot to weigh it today before I left the shop. I'll get you a weight on it... I'm fairly confident it is lighter than the Ross. I'm guessing it's about 485 just based on what their flat tops weight.

Ryan,

To compare, I have a Ross 99789 in my hand right now, just weighed it....489.3 grams. Lets see how the Wiseco does.XL400 forging

That's 4.03 bore advertised @ 479. I was thinking they were even more than that, the 4.07's are advertised @ 497 Gram & I kind of remember weighing some in the 510-515 range. I also have to check what bore size is on this sample as well, but I'll get it measured & weighed.

i thought builders were getting away from domes because of the flame travel issues or is it that big of an issue? maybe i should be looking for a dome instead of a flat top, then i could save my heads and deck.

This is not a very obtrusive dome size/shape.... I've made 760 Hp with INDY 360-1 heads with a dome that looked almost identical to this one. In a perfect world, yes I'd rather have a flat top @ 14:1 than a dome @ 14:1, but you gotta do what gotta do, it's not that big of a deal, we're not building Pro Stock motors here.

.927" versions will be available shortly in the same bore sizes.

It's good to see something for a 4.06" bore. I see a lot of 4.03 and then skip to 4.07". I'd figure ring selection for 4.06" would be better than 4.07" or 4.08".

Ryan,we recieved a piston from Weisco also.It looks like a great piece. We would also like to see it in a larger bore since the quality of the new blocks will allow large bores.
Thanks to Weisco for their continued development for Mopar.
