I am looking at replacing my cam because I think I could see some big gains in my motor. I beleive my current cam is a "weak Link" in my current set up. I am looking for some cam specs that have seen some good success. My car is 98% street driven but I am looking for as much performance as possible with out going full race. My current cam is a hydraulic flat tappet (lift intake .534 and exhaust .520 / duration @ .050 intake 242 and exhaust 250 / lobe center 112 installed @ 108) and I am looking to go with a solid flat tappet. Here are my current motor specs: 418 ci. small block with ported (stage 1) eddie heads (256 @.500 and 264 @ .600 intake / 193 @ .500 and 204 @ .600 exhaust). I have a Super Victor or RPM Air Gap intake to use. The carb. is a Pro Systems 837 cfm. I am using a Diamond piston (part # 51009) with 10.9 to 1 compression. Please let me know if you need any more info. All advice is appreciated.

Your cam looks about right for your setup. Going bigger will not give you the gains you’re wanting. It's a street car you have to compromise and leave some performance on the table.

best so far 8.53 @ 158.59 MPH 60'1.240

What type of cam are you wanting to switch to, another hydraulic, solid lifter, hydraulic roller or solid roller? what size car, weight, trans type (if auotomatic what size and stall converter do you have or plan on switching to?)and rear gear ratio and tire sizes in hieght?

I am looking to go with a solid flat tappet. The car weighs 3350 with me in it. It is a 4 spd. and the gear is 3.91.

Agree more duration would probably hurt your application.

With a fast rate solid flat tappet you can get a little more lift with your 242@.050 intake duration. 1.6 ratio rockers would help also if you are not already using them. Hughes and Muscle Motors both offer fast rate solids at around 242 duration and can recommend matching springs and 1.6 rockers if you go that route.

I'd go with something bigger and tighter lobe centers.

I would try the Comp Cams FL272B-6 or the XTQ281S-6 grinds, probally the bigger one due to your C.I. SB mopars need all the help they can get down low (below 3000 RPM)and in the middle(3000 to 6000 RPM) of the RPM range, especailly on the street One thing you need to be aware of, using either of those cams will scare the hole BEE Jesus out of the street crowd

Duration #s will have to be increased when going HYD to FT (lash)in order to keep duration #s in the same ballpark.................those FL/XTQ lobes require some additional oiling mods.

IMO, you need a bigger solid ft cam, in terms of .050" duration. My 416 with basically the same Eddy heads (blended and port-matched, NOT fully ported), exactly the same pistons (.030" over dished Diamonds) and an AirGap ran great with an Ultradyne I picked and had ground: 259/263@.050" .587/.590" lift 110LSA (installed @104 as per Harold) with an automatic (904 footbrake w/3000stall and 3.91 gears). Jerked the tires on the launch, ran 118+mph in the 1/4 all on 89oct. Plenty of bottom-end and would rev to 7,000+, but shifting at 6200 was plenty (head flow limited with that cid and stroke). Also tried 750, 850 and 950 carbs, the 750 and 950 were faster, the 750 had a better 60ft and the 950 had better mph, as would be expected. M1 single-plane intake is worth nothing in this application over the AirGap, I'd save the Super Victor for more compression, camshaft and/or better cylinder heads. Your 4spd would probably respond to tighter LSA, like 108, but I wouldn't go tighter with that cubic inch...

I agree, usually in the 10 degree range to be comparible.I would suggest that, and maybe a touch more.260-265 would be my best opinion.and like Vic stated,a little tighter lsa should help.
