The 604 trans in my 92 went into limp mode, stuck in 2nd gear. I tried shutting it of to clear it , no help. I disconneted the batery overnight still didn't clear, What is the recommended fluid for a 604?? >>>>> UPDATE>>>> Had the trans scanned for codes. Three codes, one is "gear ratio error".

I don't know about a '92 model, but on more recent fwd trans, they go into limp mode when the input or output speed sensors on the trans go bad. I think they would be the modern equivilant of carrying a spare ballest resistor in your glove box on our old cars. But I don't yet have spare speed sensors in the glove box for my 300m. My bad.

remove the battery, and battery box. check your wiring harness for the transmission. mopars are well known for battery fluid leaking down into the harness and corroding the wires. if the harness looks good and clean, then I would put in a new input sensor. please keep us posted!!

A scan tool works wonders to find the problem don't just start remove and replace stuff ,that gets expensive quick. the money saved on proper diagnosis can then be put to proper repair. yes it could be as simple as a sensor or even a connector to the speed sensors but a scan tool will also tell you the clutch volumes and various other useful information it the only way to properly diagnose these trannys

To answer your question about the fluid, it's either ATF+3 or ATF+4. Check your owners manual to be sure. DO NOT put Dexron or type F in it. I learned that lesson the hard way!

Before you do anything, find out what codes it has ?

ATF 4 is the only fluid I'd put in it

Most auto parts stores can scan it too but don't think they can clear the codes. Now in 92 I thought that was OBDI, The computer does not control the transmission does it? I think that is all hydro controlled.

Thanks for the reply.
The reason i'm asking is my wife's '93 LeBaron is in limp mode (reverse and 2nd gear only). It does have the trans. control module.

my particular issue has nothing to do w/ the fluid fortunatley. the lebaron went into limp mode first and then we chg.d the fluid(+4), filter & gasket w/ no chg.
since then i've checked fuses, pulled and chk'd connectors to the sensors, along w/ the tcm, all with the battery disco'd. no chg.
i'm still thinking of having the codes read from the tcm.
