I am looking at buying a set of headers for my 71 superbee with a 383. I see that there are alot out there I am looking for opions before I pull the trigger on a set. Also I was thinking of finding a used set what do I need to look for to get a good set? Either way I want to ask so I don't buy a junk set.
For the absolute best powder coating go to J.I.T powder coating, contact infomation is in my personal profile..

Dougs are the best bang for the buck.. Same quality of TTI but $300+ less.
What exaxctly does a set of Dougs give you that a set of Hookers don't?
Not much to go on, but I get the feeling the OP doesn't need, nor wants to pay for, premium priced headers. Even though they're not as stupid $$$ as TTI's, Dougs aren't cheap. If its a street car with a mildly hopped up 383, the best bang for buck is going to be the Summit brand (now avail. With a ceramic coating). For a 383, a 1-3/4" tube size is perfect.
If bigger and longer tubes are desired for more of a street/strip type of effort, A set of Hooker comps is nearly impossible to beat dollar for dollar.
Whatever you do, stay away from the used set. You'll be buying headers again in a couple of years. (Don't ask how I know)

Used headers? Look for warped flanges that were from overtorquing the header bolts. Excessive rust and cracked welds too. Personally, TTI's and Doug's are, I'm sure, very nice but I can live with Hookers. I got the 1&7/8" B/RB headers for my 69 Rr, sent them in for ceramic coating, they look great. Hedman makes a decent product too. The trouble with used is the varying opinions on what is "a little rust". The top-of-the-line headers have 3/8" flanges. I like 16 gauge tubing, race headers are 18 gauge. For a mild-to-tepid 383, 1&3/4" tubing headers will perform great. If you want street/strip or strip only go with the 1&7/8" at a minimum.

check around used ttis come around from time to time i just bought a set from the moparts swap on here . they were very nice and only used one summer . AS most say don't buy used rusty set of headers, however when looking at the top of the line headers only slightly used and you can pay half of the retail price , idk it make more sence to me to get the high line parts for the same money of a new lower quality part from summit .

What is a good set of headers????/ Answer: NO SUCH THING !!!!!
Obviously you never have installed a set of Doug's headers I bought a set of Doug's D452's on my Savoy and they fit and look awesome Perfect finish and nice thick 3/8 thick flanges, work with my angle plug Indy EZ heads, gaskets still good since I bolted them on Gus
Obviously , you don't do much street driving with that nice Savoy. Nothing wrong with headers for the strip to gain those few horsepower. Its just my opinion I don't like headers for the street , just a nuisance !!!I've seen so many sets of headers being removed in my brothers garage in 35 yrs, It just turned me off from them . BTW , I was using Thorley headers since the early 70s or so when he started working out of his own garage. YOu have a nice savoy there Gus .

from all the information i have picked up i have seen that fulllength headers biggest benefit for a streetcar is NOT top end power, its the additional low end torque they make also good welldesigned headers are not anykind of problem on the street, cheap poorly designed and built headers in combination with beat to death cars are what gives headers a bad reputation
