I am looking at buying a set of headers for my 71 superbee with a 383. I see that there are alot out there I am looking for opions before I pull the trigger on a set. Also I was thinking of finding a used set what do I need to look for to get a good set? Either way I want to ask so I don't buy a junk set.

For the absolute best powder coating go to J.I.T powder coating, contact infomation is in my personal profile..

Dougs are the best bang for the buck.. Same quality of TTI but $300+ less.

What exaxctly does a set of Dougs give you that a set of Hookers don't?

Not much to go on, but I get the feeling the OP doesn't need, nor wants to pay for, premium priced headers. Even though they're not as stupid $$$ as TTI's, Dougs aren't cheap. If its a street car with a mildly hopped up 383, the best bang for buck is going to be the Summit brand (now avail. With a ceramic coating). For a 383, a 1-3/4" tube size is perfect.

If bigger and longer tubes are desired for more of a street/strip type of effort, A set of Hooker comps is nearly impossible to beat dollar for dollar.

Whatever you do, stay away from the used set. You'll be buying headers again in a couple of years. (Don't ask how I know)

You should keep in mind a set that will allow angle plug heads if you ever decide to go that way. I like Doug's, Hooker and TTI.

Used headers? Look for warped flanges that were from overtorquing the header bolts. Excessive rust and cracked welds too.

Personally, TTI's and Doug's are, I'm sure, very nice but I can live with Hookers. I got the 1&7/8" B/RB headers for my 69 Rr, sent them in for ceramic coating, they look great. Hedman makes a decent product too. The trouble with used is the varying opinions on what is "a little rust".

The top-of-the-line headers have 3/8" flanges. I like 16 gauge tubing, race headers are 18 gauge. For a mild-to-tepid 383, 1&3/4" tubing headers will perform great. If you want street/strip or strip only go with the 1&7/8" at a minimum.

I agree. 69 hi-po logs are hard to beat with 2.5 duals. 500 buck headers better give you 100 hp for that kind of cash and that aint gonna happen unledd you motor is built to take advantage of headers. Plus the burned gaskets, plug wires, trans cables and heat under the hood...Your choice but for that common body style, summit specials can't be much worse performance wise than bucks headers.

What is the price breakdown now? I haven't seen any lists for quite some time. I know the coated Hooker 1 7/8" set on my car is great but I did have to do some work on one tube to get them to fit the 383. 440 was no problem w/ that same set.

Reason I ask is it seems like they were comparable in prce to Doug's, w/ TTI's being more than either.

Dig deep. TTI's. Dig even deeper for the ceramic polished. Cool under the hood now. Used headers are like used tires. Not for me.

check around used ttis come around from time to time i just bought a set from the moparts swap on here . they were very nice and only used one summer .
AS most say don't buy used rusty set of headers, however when looking at the top of the line headers only slightly used and you can pay half of the retail price , idk it make more sence to me to get the high line parts for the same money of a new lower quality part from summit .

Obviously you never have installed a set of Doug's headers
I bought a set of Doug's D452's on my Savoy and they fit and look awesome Perfect finish and nice thick 3/8 thick flanges, work with my angle plug Indy EZ heads, gaskets still good since I bolted them on

TTI's are all I have ever owned (for Mopars), but I can tell you they are probably the only ones I'll ever own. Fit and finish are spot on!! Expensive, relatively. Worth it, absolutely.

I've used Dougs, hooker and TTI...TTIs seem to go up with the gas prices... ..Each has their own good and bad points...Hooker is a true performance, equal tube header and the super comps are really light...TTIs are made for the fit at the cost of the tuned legnths...Not an issue on a street car though...I wonder what the weight difference is between them all... ...Also any header is going to get tight and might have clearance issues up at the 2 inch primary level but by then you're at the 500hp mark or you would'nt be using them.....Anyhow, I seem to keep going back to the hookers on different applications so I guess I like them best for the price, performance and fit...

Obviously , you don't do much street driving with that nice Savoy. Nothing wrong with headers for the strip to gain those few horsepower.
Its just my opinion I don't like headers for the street , just a nuisance !!!I've seen so many sets of headers being removed in my brothers garage in 35 yrs, It just turned me off from them .
BTW , I was using Thorley headers since the early 70s or so when he started working out of his own garage.
YOu have a nice savoy there Gus .

I'm running TTI's and the fit was perfect. Not a single modification was required to bolt in place.

from all the information i have picked up i have seen that fulllength headers biggest benefit for a streetcar is NOT top end power, its the additional low end torque they make
also good welldesigned headers are not anykind of problem on the street, cheap poorly designed and built headers in combination with beat to death cars are what gives headers a bad reputation
