I needed a new input shaft and support for my 518 to
change it to a 727 input so I can run one of my race
converters in my Rampage. John asked if it was the
big or small mid shaft(front of the mid shaft)... well
it had the small front... of course its the harder
to find part .... well he came through for me... he
sent me a new input shaft that fits the small mid
shaft with a new pump and support.... Thanks John
now I have everything needed to make a go fast OD
trans without lock up for my drag week car

So I hear... hopefully I can get mine done for it...
me and my buddy were talking price to head out there
with one or both rides and it looks like it would cost
us about $1300 each if we both register but less if
I ride shotgun again... I'm trying to get mine done
but still have a TON of work ahead of me

I could use a drivers door if its nice... I should
have the front of the chassis tacked together by
Sunday... the back part is pretty easy... I got
everything for the engine, trans... still need to
buy my radiator and brakes... that should be it for
the big stuff
EDIT
I can use both door panels(interior).... Doug is
this from a L body(2 door Omni/Horizon) or a Rampage
I have a broken piece of trim that is Rampage only

John is the trans man, good guy.

I have a A518, non-lockup, hydraulic (RH), and this may be in my future, so

What are the approximate dimensions that identify the "small" or "big" shaft?

As John said to me... one is the size of a pencil
(518) and one is the size of a cigar(I think he said
cigar... might have said finger 727) right on the
end of the mid shaft..... looking at it Jim the
hole in the input is like 3/8"(this is what the
518 mid shaft goes into)
EDIT
Come to think of it Jim I dont think you need to
change the input being yours is a NON lock up...
I believe a 727 conv fits your input already...
you have what I was looking for(non lock up)

Raff, thanks for the info.

I have one complete, and one parts (the main case was cracked in the junk yard).
This is the shaft in the parts transmission.
This one has the pencil sized, 0.345" dia, end for the thrust washer.

Tomorrow I will see if my 727 converter fits the input/pump/reaction support.

And just for documentation, this is what that entire shaft looks like.

My A518 (non-lockup) pump/reaction support/input shaft slide right into a 727 converter.
The setup I have has 24 splines on the input shaft (and no lockup through hole). And the tip of the input shaft has splines all the way to the end (727 style).

I believe the lockup shafts have 23 splines on the input shaft and a machined smooth tip (pic attached). And as Raff mentioned, the lockup reaction support has different fluid holes to go with the lockup input features.

And these are some other 518 notes I have kept from other posts:
Quote:

A 2-wire connector trans has OD only, no lockup.

A 3-wire trans (RH) has both lockup and OD.

The 8-wire trans (RE) has an electronic governor and lockup converter. It is electronic and only used with EFI.

'95 and earlier are designated RH and are hydraulically controlled except for the OD and converter. '96 and later are designated RE and are electronically controlled. The '95 and earlier is the best choice for retrofitting.

Here is somthing I saved on my computer showing the various input shafts.

Raff,
Did your original A518 lockup input shaft have the smooth tip, and the replacement John Cope got for you look like the 727 shaft (splines to the tip)?

Jim I dont recall if it was smooth but it did had the
hole in the center of the shaft... the one I got
from Cope looks like the middle one but no groove
at the front... come to think of it I WILL try my
converter on this set up just to make sure it fits
